Being an African woman is a tough job. You have to primarily accept that you are less important, less valued, and less appreciated when compared to men. You would only be accepted and appreciated once you see yourself in this way. In many African cultures, it is immoral for a woman to have dreams that are bigger than that of her husband.
Despite civilisation and education, the African communities still struggle to see a woman as an equal being or creation when compared to a man.
In Nigeria, culturally in most of the tribes available in the nation the male child is seen as more valuable, glorious and most times expected to turn out better than the female child.
Despite the obvious fast rising success of women in the nation, it is still a struggle for the societies, communities and even religions to see a reason to appreciate, and value an average Nigerian woman. The cultures ensure the adequate enforcement of male controlled societies education from one generation to another. The religions enables the celebration of any and all forms of abuse a man inflicts on a woman. The woman is taught to be submissive, and to always pray and support the man no matter his action. Even when he constantly hits and abuse her, she is expected to endure and pray for him to recover from his wicked ways.
A woman would do wrong by going after her dreams without the approval of her husband. The Nigerian woman is taught to support her husband's dream and ensure his success, while her dreams grows old and eventually die in the corners of her heart.
Her ideas lacks expression most times, since a good woman is expected to keep her voice down or politely shut her mouth in a male dominated nation. The fear of been called a prostitute and an uncultured or immoral woman, often seal the lips of a woman in this nation.
Even when she is raped, it is often ruled that she must have attracted the rapist to herself through her acts or speech. She can do no right by the male dominated society, except she seeks the consent and approval of the men who leads her life.
When and how will she be free from pain and slavery? How will she see beyond the picture the society has painted of her? What will she pass on to her daughters, a history of pain and low self esteem?
Arise woman, look deep within yourself to find your uniqueness. It's time to say what you feel, want
and what your dreams are. You don't have to fight the men to get what you want from life, you have to fight the negativity your soul has been fed.
Breathe a new air, let us help you find your voice, share your stories and help you live your dreams.
